St Thomas’ of Villanova Parish is located in Mareeba, near Cairns. The school is a co – education Catholic primary school servicing Prep to year 6 with 400 students.
St Thomas was ordained into priesthood and later became a bishop in 1544. For his generosity to the poor he gained the tile “Father of the Poor” and later became known as “The Pelican”. This school symbol of the Pelican is significant as is symbolises complete self-giving. “Pelican Place” is a new construction of a covered Interactive playground area for the children to enjoy.
The playground consists of several enjoyable and playful elements like rock climbing wall, slides, cargo net, climbing areas and all located under roof for protection from the elements. There are several softfall zones throughout the playground to safeguard children. Incorporated into the zones are a number of landscaped features for children to sit and read or contemplate.
